Lourdes Brass Band, were formed in the historic town of Drogheda, by the banks of the Boyne in 1959 and are one of Ireland’s most successful bands. With a membership of 100+ we operate two Bands, and run music classes for beginner students affiliated to the ABRSM.
In 2015 Lourdes were the Irish National Band National Band Champions, as well as winning 1st prize at the North of Ireland Band Championships (2nd Grade).
Following these successes the Band represented the Republic of Ireland at the European Band Championships in Lille, France in April ‘16.
In July 2016 the Lourdes Band under the baton of Michael Alcorn, won the Top prize at the South of Ireland Band Championships held in Clonakilty, Co Cork, with their youth Band LBB2 winning the top prize in the junior section at the same event.
The Band’s Musical Director is Michael Alcorn, Dean of Graduate Studies in the Faculty of Arts Humanities and Social Sciences and Professor of Composition at the University, prior to which he undertook postgraduate studies in composition at University of Durham. Prof. Alcorn has received commissions from the BBC, The National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, the Nash Ensemble, and the Ulster Orchestra among others.
Through the years the Lourdes Band have welcomed many distinguished guest tutors to their Bandroom at Bachelor’s Lane in Drogheda, including Mr. Ewan Easton MBE, Alan Morrison, Steve Sykes and James Shephard.
Notable performances for the Band were the International Youth Music Festival, Geneva 1985, and as guests of Irish President Mary McAleese at Aras An Uachtarain.
